Healthy Foods Coordinator

Foods Programs 

Lake Trail Community Education Society (LTCES) is a dynamic charitable organization which works in close relationship with Lake Trail Community School to foster a community school model. We have a strong focus on food security and food education. One of our key programs is a weekly salad bar offered free of charge to Lake Trail students, as well as healthy snacks during outreach programming. 

Position description

LTCES is seeking a Healthy Foods Coordinator to manage the salad bar program and contribute towards the snack program at Lake Trail Community School. For the 2022 / 2023 school year, LTCES is also supporting the startup of a salad bar program at Arden Elementary. The Healthy Food Coordinator will provide mentorship for this program through a collaboration.

The Healthy Foods Coordinator reports to the Community School Coordinator. 

Commitment and Compensation

$21 p/hour for 10 hours p/week.  

Salad bar is served on Wednesdays. Shopping typically takes place on Tuesdays, with preparations with volunteers on Tuesday evenings. 




  • Interest in local food security initiatives and supporting nutrition for youth.

  • Current Food Safe I certification.

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a fast-paced institutional food services environment.

  • Principles and methods of planning and preparing meals in large quantities.

  • Proficient in Excel and basic math for budgets and statistics tracking.

  • Knowledge of sanitation and safety procedures related to food settings. 

  • Must have a valid BC Driver’s License and vehicle.

  • Valid CPR and First Aid Certifications preferable.

  • Commitment to safety 


Internal Job Duties / Skills: 

  • Shopping, ordering, receiving and storing food and supplies at the school. 

  • Ability to estimate quantities and work within budgets. 

  • Working with farmers to source locally grown food whenever possible. 

  • Collaborating with schools, communities and regional/local organizations to improve proximity and local capacity in food security, nutrition, student engagement as able within the hours available. 

  • Following established safety procedures to ensure food safety. 

  • Monitoring food quality, quantity, temperature and food safety. 

  • Lifting and carrying food containers, reaching, bending and twisting to pack meals for distribution, load the dishwasher, etc. 

  • Working with PPE requirements.

  • Scheduling and supervising volunteers.

  • Maintaining basic records using established forms. 

  • Maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and staff.

  • Teamwork skills. 


External Job Duties: 

  • Maintains a positive image to the public about LTCES. 


Food preparations will take place in the Lake Trail Community School foods room or concession. We expect the Healthy Foods Coordinator to follow safety protocols put forth by the BC Health Office, the Ministry of Education, Lake Trail Community School, and LTCES, and actively promote and support the health and safety of students, staff, and volunteers. 



This contract is based on an average of 10 hours/week when school is in session, at a rate of $21/hour. These hours cover shopping, collecting, and sourcing ingredients; prep, engagement, and clean-up; and volunteer management and administrative tasks. 


This position runs throughout the school year with breaks during SD71 school closures.
